New Home Office Approval regs for clubs now in force

2 Aug 2016 – The Home Office Approval criteria for rifle clubs has been updated, with the biggest change being formal recognition that rifle club members can shoot at other clubs without being members of them.

The full details were published by the NRA about a month ago. Club secretaries should read them.

The other big difference is that the criteria have been put into an ordered list, of the form a), b), c) … etc, rather than just bullet points.

The NRA link above has a detailed breakdown of the important points to note in the guidance, which do not represent major changes.

Hmmm, that’s guidance not law – I’m not happy at all with the register – it’s a horde of information for who has what – and should it go missing…….gee thanks

Nope, it is law – tertiary legislation, enabled by section 15 of the 1988 Act. Secretary of State has powers to issue these by decree and clubs must abide by them.

That register requirement’s been in there since I started shooting, and probably long before then. No real change – it’s a lip service one, in my experience, though I ensure my clubs enforce it.

ah duly educated me on that (section 15 of 88 act). My clubs currently have a record of type and calibre but not as yet serial number.

I’m not keen on these registers, risk – gets abused by a visitor who now has a list of names and firearms possessed, reward – so the old bill can decide who gets their guns yanked because they’re not using them.

our club has yet to records serial numbers, but the logs are held by membershio number not by name so less risk that way !!

that’s what one of my clubs does, we’re discussing a way forward at the other club. Record keeping is a bit “sketchy” at the other one……
